About the cups

Made from a highly durable, biobased, renewable material.

Futurity cups are made from a highly durable biobased high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Futurity chose to work with a renewable material rather than a traditional petrochemical-based polymer to eliminate the need for use of fossil-fuel derived plastics and help to keep our oil in the ground, where it belongs.

Extensive testing and research was undertaken, utilising numerous grades of materials to ensure safety, durability and functionality. This biobased polymer is physically and chemically identical to petrochemical HDPE and is 100% kerbside recyclable as a number 2 in New Zealand and Australia.

The cups have been designed in two different sizes - 285ml and 425ml brimful. Futurity are supplying these cups on a rental or wholesale basis to their clients in New Zealand and Australia. For rental products, a circular cleaning factory has been commissioned in order to effectively sort, wash and store these reusable products. All damaged cups are collected and recycled by Futurity, and turned into post-consumer HDPE, ready to be made into new products.

Designed for a circular
economy

Futurity are responsible for the impact that our products have on the natural environment. Product stewardship involves management of the potential environmental impacts from the production, use and disposal of our products. Our reusable cups are made from plant-based material, not oil, and are 100% kerbside recyclable in New Zealand and Australia as a number 2. Futurity has manufactured this product to be reused and recycled at its end of life as part of our continued effort to transition from a take-make-waste model to a circular economy.

Futurity aim to make best use of the renewable resources available to us. Our cups are made from some of the most innovative biobased materials globally available. This material is derived from a sugarcane feedstock. As the sugarcane grows, it naturally sequesters carbon from the atmosphere. At the factory source, this material is carbon positive and has removed -3.09 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent per kilogram from the natural environment.

The waste management hierarchy involves reducing, reusing, recycling, recovering and disposing of products. Futurity cups are positioned at the top of this hierarchy, using renewable plant based materials to create a reusable product that reduces the amount of waste generated. On a rental basis, the cups are then reused on average ten times. Following this, the cups are recycled by Futurity or one of their recycling partners and then processed into post-consumer recyclable material before being moulded into new products.

About Futurity Manufacturing

Our Cup FAQs

01.

Where does Futurity Manufacturing come from?

Futurity Manufacturing was founded in New Zealand in 2017 and is proudly New Zealand owned and operated. Futurity processes advanced biomaterials into plastics components for a variety of industries and sectors. We are a collective of product designers and engineers, with the manufacturing capability to create more environmentally friendly products for businesses and consumers to use. Our business continues to evolve by collaborating with local and global specialists to continue to adapt to an ever changing business sector and deliver leading innovation.

02.

What are the cups made from? Are they biodegradable?

The cups are made from a biobased high density polyethylene (HDPE), derived from sugarcane. At material source, it is carbon
positive, based on sugarcane’s ability to sequester carbon from the atmosphere as it grows. Our cups are manufactured in the South Island of New Zealand. The material we use is highly recyclable and reusable and is not biodegradable or compostable.

03.

What makes Futurity cups different from other offerings?

As a bioplastics manufacturer and specialist, we noticed a large gap in the market. The majority of current reusable offerings are made from fossil-fuel derived and non-recyclable plastics. We realise that some cups leave venues and that is why we have created a cup that can be easily kerbside recycled should patrons wish to dispose of their cup after an event.

04.

Are the cups durable? Will they withstand a commercial dishwasher?

The cups have undergone extensive testing to ensure that they are safe for patrons to use for cold beverages.
These cups are not suitable for hot beverages such as coffee due to the thin wall thickness. When trampled under foot, the cup's base has a tendency to collapse and flatten, resulting in less ankle injuries for patrons entering and exiting high volume areas. This also means the cups will not shatter and leave hard to remove plastic splinters in areas for waste management to remove. The cups have also undergone extensive testing in a commercial dishwashing environment, to ensure that they can be sterilised and dried to a very high standard.

05.

Does Futurity have any other products available?

Futurity have designed New Zealand’s first 100% commercially compostable water bottle solution and also a biobased and durable
cutlery set. We are currently prototyping a number of additional reusable products. Futurity also work with other businesses to design,
engineer and manufacture bioplastic consumer and durable products. Keep an eye on our website for further information.
